A Letter From the Editor
With the holidays upon us, it’s important to feel your best for all the festivities. Whether you’re hosting gatherings, traveling to see loved ones, or simply enjoying the season, prioritizing your health can make all the difference. Staying active and energized allows you to be fully present for every joyful moment this season brings.
Here are 3 ideas for increasing mindfulness this holiday season:
- Love yourself and who you are
- Fat first
- Take a stroll
1. This is a busy time of year and it’s easy to fill every waking moment with something “too important to wait”. It’s okay, even necessary, to remember yourself. Setting aside a few minutes to pause and take some deep breaths brings vital energy back to tired bodies. I like to begin and end each day in the same way: remembering the things I am most grateful for, voicing them out loud, and giving thanks to the Creator. It takes only a moment but it sets the stage for the whole day. At the end of a long day, especially the hard ones, it reminds me of why and for whom we work so hard. Sometimes it’s just what I need to remember that I am incredibly blessed.
2. The holidays seem to bring an abundance of opportunities for over-indulgence. At every turn there seems to be an opportunity to indulge in something, and often something sweet. Rather than setting yourself up for failure by creating an extremist guideline of not eating any sugar, I would suggest a different strategy: wisdom and thoughtfulness.
You already know you shouldn’t eat the whole pie; no one needs to tell you that. But did you know that the order in which you eat your foods impacts the effect on your body? Starting with dessert, or a sweet treat, can be tempting but when you begin with sweets you spike your blood-sugar levels and begin a chain reaction of adverse events in your body. If instead you opt for first eating a food high in natural fats (like an avocado) or a protein rich food, you are now priming your body for consumption and allowing it to gradually ramp up to deal with the entirety of your meal- dessert and all. So, eat the fat, or protein, first! And take a moment to think about and be grateful for the foods, sweets and all, that are available to you this holiday.
3. The best thing you can do after eating any meal, especially the big ones, is to get up and do something physical. The holidays are usually a time when we have family present, often family we don’t see every day. After sitting down to the table, why not get outside and go for a stroll? Stretching your legs and walking is a great way to help your body process that meal and it allows you to enjoy the most beautiful time of year to be in the desert.
